Coil whine is a common sound generated by power supplies due to the vibration of coils in an inductor. When electrical current flows through an inductor, it causes changes in the magnetic field around it. These changes result in slight vibrations in the coils, which manifest as audible noise. While this sound is normal, many power supplies include sound-dampening materials to help minimize it.
For more details on sound-dampening materials, check out this article.
If the noise you're hearing doesn't seem electrical in nature, it could be coming from the power supply’s fan. If the noise sounds like rattling, you can try the following steps:
- Power down the system and disconnect all cables from the power supply.
- Gently tighten the four screws around the fan to see if this reduces the noise.
Please note that ORIGIN PC does not recommend opening your power supply for any reason, as it can be dangerous.
Coil whine is not considered a defect but a byproduct of normal operation. However, if you have concerns about your power supply's coil whine, feel free to reach out to our support team by creating a ticket.
